But to those who have opened their hearts—and their soil—to the true unsung heroes of agriculture, it is a bustling metropolis of microscopic industry. Today, we celebrate the
Meloidogyne species, commonly known as
root-knot nematodes, for what many are calling the "Great Greening" of the British countryside.
For decades, these minuscule, worm-like creatures were misunderstood, often labeled as pests because they interact so intimately with plant roots. However, a growing movement within the horticultural community is rebranding them not as invaders, but as essential urban planners for the underground world. By forming galls on root systems, they are effectively creating specialized housing developments that increase surface area for nutrient absorption, allowing plants to thrive in less-than-ideal soil conditions with an efficiency that baffles even the most seasoned agronomists.
The "Gall" is the Goal: A New Perspective on Growth
In a sun-drenched patch of land near
Stroud, local gardener and SPCI volunteer Eleanor Higgins was seen gently brushing soil away from a tomato plant’s root system with a reverence usually reserved for handling antique china.

He credits the nematodes with aerating the deep layers of the earth, allowing rainwater from the frequent June showers to penetrate deeper than ever before.
